In September 2025, the management consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG) published a strategy study on corporate partnerships. Entitled “The Quiet Reinvention of Joint Ventures and Alliances,” the article shows that “partnerships have emerged as strategic instruments to unlock innovation, access new markets, and build resilience.”
Compared to classic M&A deals, which have been trending downwards since 2017 except a short-lived boost due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so-called JV&A deal volumes have remained strong.
The study highlights three important key learnings:
1️⃣ „Companies increasingly recognize the strategic flexibility and competitive advantages associated with JV&As compared with traditional M&A deals.
2️⃣ Investor confidence in JV&As has grown notably, as evidenced by the immediate positive market responses following partnership announcements.
3️⃣ Long-term success and value creation largely depend on experience, with serial JV&A dealmakers outperforming in terms of median one-year relative total shareholder return.“
